About Senpokan Dojo

The senpokan dojo was founded in 2003 by Tony Alvarez sensei in Costa Mesa, ca. Prior to 2003; , the senpodoko kai was in operation at the shidare yanagi ryu dojo of Don Angier soke in Long Beach, Ca...

The name senpokan translates as” to seize / strategy / school" ”or in other words, “seizing the initiative through combative tactics and principles”. It is from the term sen sen no sen that this philosophy of taking the initiative in battle or in life comes from and is a core principle behind all of the training and teaching within the senpokan dojo!

The arts taught and studied at the senpokan are Meishi-Ha Mugai Ryu Iaihyodo, Toyama Ryu Batto Jutsu , the seitei curriculum of the Zen Nihon Batto Do Renmei, Uchida Ryu Tanjo Jutsu and the Hojo Jutsu of the Shidare Yanagi Ryu Aiki Bugei ( this is for senior members only).

Also, there is an official study group practicing the art of Takamura-Ha Shindo Yoshin Ryu under the guidance of sensei Toby Threadgill, kaicho of the shinyokai and a pre -war style kendo study group under the direction of Harry Dach sensei of the Memphis kendo club.

Anyone interested in becoming a member of the senpokan dojo must submit a written request to Alvarez sensei at

An interview will be scheduled at that time to determine if the prospective member will be accepted!

All dojo fees and schedules will be discussed at that time also.
